[UniQuaria] Relocating a 60 gallon tank
Considering the move you are talking about, I’d say go for it. The biggest move I ever made with a tank was moving a 55g tank with 6 male dwarf gouramis, a school of serpae tetras and 6 bronze aeneus cories from Flagstaff to Bisbee - roughly a 6.5 hour drive. I put everyone in 1g jars, sealed them and loaded them in the car. When we made stops for potty breaks, gas or sodas/snacks, I opened the jars to allow some air exchange, then resealed the jars and off we went. They all ended up staying in those jars for a few days actually, as I couldn’t get the tank set up right away. I dropped airstones into the jars with the tets and cories, and the gouramis took care of their own air supply. I had hornwort and other fast growing plants in with the fish, too, which I’m sure helped. Amazingly enough, after all that, I didn’t lose a single fish. I finally got the 55g set back up using the original gravel, plants put in, fish added, and everyone was happy.
I used similar techniques when we moved across town a few years ago. At that time, I had angels, a convict, a firemouth, swordtails, cories, a couple of HUGE plecos, a blue gourami, a red tailed black shark, 2 oscars, tiger barbs, zebra danios and a couple others I can’t recall at the moment. Three tanks - 29g, 55g, 125g. I moved the oscars and plecos in 5g buckets and dropped airstones in when we got them to the new house. Needless to say, their tank - the 55 - was the first to go up to get them out of the buckets. Then I worked on the 29 and 125 tanks, which took me a couple of days to get ready for fish due to plantings and putting rocks and such back in place. Between breaking down the tank at the old house and setting it up at the new house, I kept everyone from those 2 tanks in 1g jars or 5/10g tanks, depending on species and “attitude”. My angels were youngsters at the time of that move, but the other two cichlids and all the other fish were adults. I used airstones in all the jars or tanks except the gourami’s jar. I had anacharis, hornwort and cabomba for that move, along with some rooted plants. No losses with that move either. Everyone settled into their “new” home quickly and went right on like nothing happened.
I hope that helps.

Has anyone ever successfully relocated a tank before without adversely affecting the fish?
