Starting a tank

The river sand should be fine. By the time you clean it up - running water through it until it runs clear - it will look good.
The sand in my favorite Kansas river is a soft, golden color. I suppose most sand it :-)
I like to collect sand, rocks and driftwod AFTER spring planting and early summer harvest. In July and August the water level drops. And the fertilizer/herbicide/ feedlot rain water run-off is at it’s lowest concentration.
As you read up on planting and types of plants - search for tips on plants do will in sand. Sometimes hobbyists will plants up some of their greenry in pots with: a heavier gravel over Laterite. This allows the roots to really anchor themselves and get lots of nutrition.
I’m guessing your light has 2 watts per gallon?
