Pond rocks.

Hi all,
I have several large stones arranged so my fish can swim through and around them. They also hide in there briefly if they are a bit spooked. It’s a bit like an underwater ‘Stone henge’.
The more I look at it though, the more I realise how much room it takes up […]

Saturday night quiz thingee

Ask folks who try to wash their clothes in hard water - like your wife, maybe. That is why Culligan and other water softener companies are in business. Soap won’t foam and do its thing in hard water.
Look up water softeners and real their spiel - they all probably talk about why you […]

[AquaticLife] New Koi Pond - 750+ gallons, best equipment choices? Fish saved from bad home

Steve,
I just wanted to clarify that I didn’t suggest aeration from the bottom of the pond but rather a floating surface bubbler so it doesn’t cause any actual movement in the total pond volume so the thermoclines stay uniform. It just relies on the warm air from the pump rather than a coil heater.
I’ve also […]

A powerhead is just an underwater water pump. It has an intake, the motor/impeller and then an output. They are generally small so people can put them in a corner or behind something to hide them. They are generally used to just move water around in a tank but people also hook […]

[AquaticLife] Contradictory info. on “lucky bamboo” plant

That’s ordinary bamboo. It is NOT completely submersible, only the roots are submersible. It can be grown either in water OR soil. An easy to find plant that IS submersible is the Devil’s Ivy. I have grown it underwater in plastic pots containing pea-sized gravel.

Zebrafish “Glo-Fish” breeding–babies available to SWAP

I also don’t see the attraction of cross-breeding to make “new” fish. For me the goal of an aquarium is to approximate a natural underwater world. Pressure on wild populations can be reduced by breeding the pure species in captivity in conditions that approximate the natural environment. Experienced fishkeepers spend a lot of time […]

Is RO water absolutelty necessary for Discus?)

Nim, you have no idea how long I hesitated myself before trying it…
Play with it in a bucket of saltwater, it must be superglue-gel however. Most stores sell tiny tubes that don’t last long and tend to harden on their own once opened. I either purchase “re-named” large tubes of it from […]
