Many of the PetsMart fish are the bottom of the barrel fish from breeders since PetsMart wants the best/lowest prices on what they buy. Most breeders will keep the best fish for themselves, the next best would go to their closest friends who are also breeders, then to their local customers, aquarium societies, LFS […]

I have lost a number of adult mystery snails to the intake filter. I have a fluval canister on the tank that this happened to and I had to put a sponge pre filter on it to avoid this problem. Pam

See my long article about “Filter Maintenance And Cleaning” for more details of how I and many others “clean” our filter cartridges and other filter media without ever […]

Wen surgery, which is only needed in rare situations, while it can be done by the hobbyist, is best left to a veterinarian or at least a hobbyist with experience. You wouldn’t have to worry about the fish wiggling since it would be under anesthesia (usually clove oil solution for the hobbyist). Do […]

The best thing to use for shims would be pieces of hardwood shaped in wedges. Some roofing shingles could also be used if the gap needing to be filled was large enough. If you go to a hardware or big box home improvement store, they actually sell packages of shims in the windows […]

See my previous post to Bill. A tank and the stand are designed to sit level. Considering the weight of a tank, if it’s leaning too much, it starts to create new pressure or stress points which could cause either the tank or the stand to fail. Water weighs 8 pounds per […]

Well, a tank that is only a little uneven, maybe a 1/4″ or 1/2″ out of perfect vertical… I don’t think that small amount will cause any major stress problems but it would be aesthetically awkward looking, especially if you can see the top water line or if the tank and stand are leaning away […]
