Well Magnums come in floor standing models too. Magnums are closer to diatom/micron filters than traditional canister filters. Most of the volume inside a Magnum is unused while traditional canister use pretty much all the volume to hold media of various kinds.
As you can see in the photos, the Magnums use the […]

Beverly, it sounds to me like your ballast has been possibly damaged by a power surge. Compact Fluorescents don’t use starters so there’s nothing more to the whole fixture than a switch, ballast and bulbs. Do try to mount perhaps an old bulb you may have to make sure the bulb […]

Hi Jack,
A canister has the main advantage of being able to hold a lot more media than other forms of filtration. If you are going with a large tank housing large fish, there will be quite a large amount of particulate and organic waste being generated. A single canister can hold […]

In that case… 20 gallons should be fine for a dwarf cichlid. They can be sensitive to heavy metals so make sure your tap water conditioner takes care of that. He’ll become less shy with time, I’m sure you’ll be able to get a picture soon.
I wonder how the fish store came […]

Me too, never heard of a Ram Angelfish… Perhaps if you post a photo of it someone will be able to identify it properly for you.
Generally speaking an angelfish will outgrow a 20 gallon as an adult but you may have some time on your hands if you purchased a small specimen.
