Ok, I’ll bite on this one. I would have to say it makes it dirtier.
The UV light will clear up the water itself but not remove contaminants like a plant would and Algae being a plant,massive amounts of tinny plants in your water should remove more contaminants and oxygenate the water than a filter alone.

I got mine off ebay for about 40 bucks plus shipping. You can google them and find plenty of sites that carry them including Petsmart online. They run for about $60.00 retail.

Ok, I checked the dates and all my regents are from either January, February or March of 07.
I have only used it like half a dozen times so it is not close to being low like in the second link.
