Your BERN-WHO?-LI is interesting - but not applicable. It only relates to very short apparatuses - a venturi - but not to a length of pipe. More important is a velocity/friction loss chart. Just use it to calculate the head loss and you will see what happens when you try to install this pump with a 1″ pipe instead of a 3″.
A good rule of thumb is to always keep your velocities below 5 ft/sec.
