I couldnt agree more many many moons ago at the university when ever I set up a new tank I always used the diatom filter to remove debris from our substrates before I did anything else works fantastic and eliminates further problems with it as what we were using was collected on location and had all kinds of crud in it I once posted a note on here saying I thought a diatom was a filter for occasional use and was sorta cheating but this is one of those issues that they come in really handy for
my info is based on my experiences long ago and there may be members with far more recent experience than mine so please take this with a grain of salt it used to work well today there may be a remedy I am not familiar with harm none do what you will B
