i purchased a yellow koi a couple weeks ago. he now has a large sore on his body and when I feed my koi, he comes up to eat he flips over and over. He still eats. I treated my whole pond for disease and started feeding a bacterial fish food. What does he have? None of my other koi have any thing on them.
You added the new fish to the pond without quarantine? It’s always necessary to isolate a new koi (with a buddy) to make sure you are not introducing something to your collection. It also gives the fish a chance to rest after transport where the fish’s immune system is suppressed to begin with. You also have the opportunity to observe the fish for signs of health and/or parasite problems. Chances are the fish is “flashing”. That is when a fish rubs up against something as if it were scratching something that itches. They “flip” and turn as they do that. This is a sign that something is irritating the fish. Maybe parasites. Maybe new water. Could be a number of things. Without scraping and scoping it would be hard to know if there is a parasite at work here. Usually if the fish is getting used to new water, you’ll see jumping and flashing pretty quickly after introducing it to the pond/tank so I doubt that is it. Likely a parasite at work here. What did you treat the pond with? What are your water test results? Ammonia, nitrite, nitrates, PH, KH, GH??? Heavy rains lately? Anything that you can think of that would have interrupted the bio filter system? Sue
