[Ponds-Koi] string algae

Linda,

I have koi clay in bulk bags. 10-40 lbs. Relatively inexpensive as I don’t spend anything on fancy packaging. Depending on the type of pond you have, organic barley straw bales can be beneficial also. I will have a new supply of barley in about a month. Or, you could add a Clarity foam fractionator which will reduce DOCs substantially which will essentially starve it out. The Clarity foam fractionators are new here in the US but have been used successfully in Europe for several years.

The clay and barley straw if used together seems to do a pretty good job. I have several clients who use it each year. The downside is that the clay does make a mess if overdosed, and the barley can color the water a bit. Although more expensive the Clarity may offer a more permanent solution but I would have to evaluate your individual situation to give you a better answer.

Your pond type, the fish load, your filtration equipment, the weekly maintenance you perform and the zone you live in all are important factors in determining what may or may not work for you.

Any or all of these suggestions may not work if the above factors are not taken into consideration. Sometimes simply adding a shade sail is enough to reduce the string algae to acceptable levels.

Regards,

Karl

I am having a terrible time with string algae. I know I have read about koi clay and I am needing to purchase some for the pond. Where??? Is there any that is better than others? Thank you! LINDA
