[Ponds-Koi] Other pond fish compatible with Koi?
2008/5/3 Lenny V. aka GoldLenny : said a lot of stuff about Plecos
Lenny! Wow! honestly, I did not know that about Plecos! This is ONE reason that I enjoy this forum! I learn something new nearly every time I get a note from someone!
OK, 2 of my Plecos are in tanks with Goldfish and small Koi. I know Goldies prefer slightly colder water about 60-65 degrees I believe so I do not have a heater in the tanks with the Goldfish. Should I put a heater in there??? Also, I did not know that the Plecos were nocturnal and omnivores. I thought they ate algae and other things growing on the tank walls and surfaces. should I add a piece of wood to the tanks??? Am I hurting my Plecos by leaving them cold and not with any wood fiber? What about food? should I get some specifically for Plecos or will they eat standard fish flakes or pellets?
So far my Plecos seem to be doing well enough. One is about 2 years old and the other is about 6 months. I HAVE lost them in the past but put it down to starting the tank up and the associated problems with that.
I know this is about Koi primarily….but A pond, even an artificial one with glass all around it is an environmental system and everything effects other things! My goal is to have healthy and comfortable fish. I do not want them to be miserable and uncomfortable! Or worse! Die!
One Good thing here is that Carp are native to Iowa. We have Grass carp living in the stream only a mile from my home and the river that runs through downtown is ALIVE with carp Often HUGE ones. Not pretty really, but they are the same basic fish. So I am not TOO worried about keeping Koi alive around here. Even so, I plan to build an indoor facility for cold weather!
