A well-intentioned relative found a huge fireant mound near the top of my waterfall and sprayed it with ant killer after he was bit by one. When I heard this, I ran out to find my Koi and goldfish in a feeding frenzy on all these fireants that escaped into the waterfall and fell into the main pond (or fell dead into it). There were probably a hundred fireants going over the falls just while I stood there freaking out because most of them were sprayed and dead and I could see a light film on the waterfall edge where the spray got in the water, but it has become too dark for me to see now. I sprinkled 3-4 tablespoons of Koi clay around the falls where the ants were going down because I read something somewhere how the Koi Clay will remove toxins in the water. ??? Will it help? What else can I do? Besides pray my fish don’t die? Any advice?
Hopefully there wasn’t a high enough dose of the ant killer to really hurt the fish. You’ll know for sure within 48 hours if damage was done. In the meantime all you can really do to ensure their safety is a water change which will dilute whatever might have gotten into the water. What they have eaten, nothing there you can do. Clay certainly won’t hurt, but you’ll need a lot of it. Maybe a cup or two to 5,000 gallons. Sue
