Unfortunately, there is a lot of gossip from folks who are ill-informed about some products - Algaefix and Algaway (same chemical) definitely among them. Therefore:
The recent thread about Algaefix in another forum exemplified the misuse of information. This posting is to properly answer the original question - “is it safe?”
Bill you are likely correct when assessing the tests performed for these products, but I’ve heard too many horror stories about Algaefix to dismiss it as simply human error. In the hands of the average hobbyist, this product can and does kill fish. No doubt about it. This is why I don’t personally recommend it to someone that doesn’t really “know” their pond. I mean really know there pond. Most average pond keepers do not really know the exact gallons in their pond or how the fish load influences many meds, etc. It’s much like using PP. I would not recommend that to anyone unless they really knew what they were doing. These products may have a place, but why risk killing off our pampered pets when other alternatives are available. Algae (either kind) can be resolved by simply testing water (both tap and pond), cutting back on feeding, lowering population, better filtration, (all or any of the above) to contain this weed. Sometimes it is just a matter of letting the pond mature and cycle. This sometimes can take a few seasons to accomplish this. Sue
