Pond Pump died. Suggestions for new one?
Presently I’m using two pumps on my pond.
The waterfall and filter are powered by a older design Diamond Mag Flow pump I had for over 12 years. This pupm looks like a standard sump pump and is rated at 3,700 gph. This pump had turned may a Koi into chopped meat that are under 4″. Since then I have made a Bag around it with black lace netting and have not had the problem since. I know I’m not getting 3,700 GPH out of this pump since I have installed some 1,800gph pumps in other peoples water falls with better flow than I have here. At z lift it does put out a lot of water but with just 2′ lift it drops off drasticly and has a cut of of about 6′. I know some of the impellers got broke off this pump through the years, and I’m sire where replacement parts are available any more for this modle.
The second pump is running a fountain at 1,200 gph. This pump as a Danner MagDrive which I did have a canaster prefilter on. The problem with the canaster prefilter was that had a 1 1/5″ inlet which would suck the fish into it as well. I tried scalling down the inlet size but the flow dropped of considerably. So right now I’m using the sponge filter that came with this pump. Yes it needs to be cleaned out at least daily.
Next spring I’m going to make some changes to the system that would require to much work right now.
1. the water fall filter pump will be inclosed in cage or pump vault and used for the fountain head.
2. The present fountain pump will be used with a skimmer input and will be used to power my water fall. Now depending on the flow appearance of the water fall and stream I might upgrade this pump to a 2,400gph pump or even larger. I know a new 5,400gph pump would be way to powerful as I had tested one for a customer with an even larger water fall.
