Please Help!!
Hello,
I recently had to remove all my plants and replace them with new ones due to the worst algae I have ever had. I had string algae, regular green algae and some blue green stuff that spread out over everything and covered it like a net almost. So I put in new plants, new decoration and I added a rubber lip pleco to help out my otocinclus. I did a regular PWC (I do 20% evey 2 weeks) at the time with a very good cleaning of the glass and filter etc… Well, for the first 2 weeks everything was fine. Did another PWC a week ago and every since then the algae has been growing quicker than EVER before. I can see the horrible blue green stuff growing back too and my new decoration is starting to turn green too. I have reduced the lighting during the day to try and hold it back, and cut back on the amount of food that goes in. But it makes no difference. My question is what is the best way to get this algae in check? I have an algaecide but am reluctant to use it. My new little pleco is doing a great job, but as soon as he eats it, it comes back. It seems like I never had a problem with algae when I had fake plants. I have a 44 gal pentagon with a little more than 2 watts of light per gallon. For my PWC’s I use RO water mixed with Spring water. ( Our Florida water is horrible)I have Eco complete substrate mixed with gravel for my substrate. Sorry this is long, but I am so frustrated and ready to chuck the plants entirely and try fake again. Lisa
