new with a question
Can you give us a little more information on the tank itself, such as size, fish load and filtration used? Test results?
My initial thought is that if they are only doing this for a couple minutes then acting normal for the majority of the time, it may not be a problem, perhaps they are eating organics that have accumulated at the surface… But we are in the middle of a change of season which is when we see most of the changes in tap water chemistry occur due to some townships changing sources and so forth.
What water conditioner do you use? I know SA cichlids are sensitive to heavy metals which needs to be addressed with an appropriate conditioner. Also many conditioners tend to consume oxygen which may explain a temporary state of low oxygen levels following the water change…
Until you figure out what it is, make sure there is sufficient surface agitation from the filter’s return or use an air pump to assure good axygen levels.
Hope that helps Giancarlo Podio, LMD
