New to site and fish keeping
Unless you add bacteria from an outside source, you will have to cycle the tank which takes 6-8 weeks before you put in fish. If the tank you got from your mother has been running continuously with a number of fish in it, then its already cycled. But dont leave it without fish in it for more than 24-48 hours because the bacteria need the fish waste to live.
Does your mother have a pH test you can use?
