Simplest way to decide if you have a sanke or showa is, showa has black at the base of the fins, starting at the elbo closest to the body outwards and in various ammounts, sankes may have a black stripe or two in the fins, but away form the elbow, sanke the elbow is often white or single striped. That can be the only way to tell sometimes, sanke and showa being basicly the same base colours.

OOPS!!!! Sorry, but I just noticed a mistake while reading the email I sent regarding the differences between the Sanke and Showa varieties of koi. my description of the Sanke should have read: “A Sanke is a white koi with the typical red and BLACK patterns on their bodies. They usually don’t have any of the black pattern extending onto their head.” It’s pretty hard to have a white pattern on a white bodied koi. My bad, Don ikeepkoi
Hi xoxk, (would like to know a first name) You mentioned having trouble knowing the difference between a Sanke and Showa.
In general, the big difference between the two are:
A Sanke is a white koi with the typical red and white patterns on their bodies. They usually don’t have any of the black pattern extending onto their head.
A Showa is actually a black koi with the typical red and white patterns on their bodies. There will always be a black pattern on a Showa’s head. Best wishes, Don ikeepkoi
