My pump keeps plugging!
The only way we have found to combat this type of problem is to add regular doses of Algaefix to the pond. We have a 3,000 gal pond and add 16 oz of Algaefix every week. It’s not cheap, but it works. In the heaviest part of the algae season, I still have to clean the skimmer and leaf basket once every 3-4 days. According to a friend who services ponds, using larger doses of Algaefix would stop even that amount of cleaning.
In retrospect, I probably should have designed the pond with some type of prefilter, but it’s too late for that and the Algaefix keeps the algae under reliable control without doing any apparent harm to either fish or plants. We buy it on line at Drs Foster & Smith in the 2.5 gal size for about $100.. This is enough for about 5 months of treatment which is probably good enough for the algae-growing portion of a year.
