Looking Koi(Steuben Co NY)
I just checked on of the exprters price listing. These are wholesale prices for 12″ to 16″ mixed Koi 18 to 24 months old. If you want to specify a specific color they are 35% higher.
Select = $165 Premium = $105 Standard = $65
This is buying a whole box ful (8 fish in this size) Then you have to average shipping charges, vary by how many boxes one brings in a one time. And since I’m not in LA there is a middle man fee to walk them through customs and shp them to my local airport.
I learned only to buy Premium or Select rather than standard. There is real big difference in color and patterns between these varieties. 90% of the koi you see in pictures are the better of the lot of what would be considered Select.
Think of it as when someone culls from a large spawn of fish.
At 3″ The bottom 40% are culled out completly, 10% are considered Select, 20% are considered Premium, and 30% are considered Standard. Then roughly every 3 months they pick the best of the best of these again and call them Select followed by Premium and they pull the bottom ones.
