koi per gallon
I have heard the 250 gallons per fish before looking at an adult full sized 30″ plus fish. However one must keep in mind that the Koi take almost 20 years to get that large. Plus when your in a climate where your pond will drop to under 40 degrees at least 6 months out of the year it may take longer.
My present stocking level is 150 gallons per fish, or 50 gallons per inch of fish. However I’m thinking of adding more fish which will take this to 25 gallons per fish. Since all the fish are under 5″ this I do not think will be an issue.
Now the other think to keep in mind is that next year I’ll be adding another pond for an extra 7,000 gallons. if I moved all the fish to that pond I’d have over 100 gallons per fish.
Now for Filteration I’m running a custom system I designed myself. This is my first pond without a surface skimmer but it does have an overflow set up. The filter is presently handling 2 water turns per hour. Plus I do have a an agravate bottom for surface are throughout the pond for benificial bacteria.
Nitrogen tests all read 0 yet and I think this is key.
On growth I expect my 3″ to 5″ koi to get an added 3 inches by next year at this time. Then the following year an added 4″ I beleive after that first 12″ the growth rate on Koi slows considerably.
