I’m once again thoroughly enjoying ponding/ koi keeping
Thank you all for your welcome back remarks, advice, and encouragement. I’m adjusting my feeding schedule and it seems to be working well at 3 times minimum per week. It’s doing a number on the filters so I’m going to augment the filtering by adding another pump and DIY Filter at the opposite end of the pond. One of the ‘gimme koi’ I got isn’t not a koi at all. It’s a standard fin commet with some red markings on it’s head. I looked closer and it didn’t have the barbs. So I thought I had two kohakus now I actually have one. Also, there is another pond member that I just spotted when I was out at the pond. I hadn’t seen him all spring I thought maybe something happened to him but all of a sudden he has appeared. It’s a mystery; not unless the water had to get really warm for him to come out of ‘hybernation’, but that seems kinda strange. I don’t know for sure what kind of fish it is. It’s dark gray with a black spot near it’s tail on both sides, it’s has a deeper (dorsasl to belly) and flatter body than a koi, it’s somewhat oval shaped and moves very fast, when startled. I wondered if it was a Breem but I’m not sure. I may try to get a picture and see if anybody recognizes it. Oh well back to looking for one more addition to the family to complete it. Freebie Koi. I’m only looking for one more because I’m already getting two from my sister, who has had two koi in a tank for a while and she has finally recognized that they are crowded in the tank so she’s letting me rehome them in my pond. Ofcourse I will qt. Anybody know of anything I should be aware of when dealing with acquarium to pond koi? I suspect they might be jumpers due to the entirely new evironment.
Happy Koi keeping I love pondering about my pond.
