floating pre-filter ??

YES AND NO…..
The best pre-filter has no restriction. Restricting the water going INTO the pump is a NO-NO! Restricting the output is usually good for the pump - but not the intake.
So, the best prefilter is one that does not restrict but still protects the pump from clogging. We make an excellent one that starts with a black plastic milk crate that we attach one layer of a polyethylene hardware cloth to. (Regular hardware cloth is the metal wire stuff like big mosquito screen that is used to make rabbit cages - for example. Our black poly version has holes about 3/8″ square.) If you are using a submersible pump, it goes inside the crate. If a dry pump, the intake pipe goes into it.
If you add any finer screen or filter media, it will work. And the filterbox will clog and restrict the intake to the pump and also require cleaning! UGH! MAINTENANCE!! The object is to have any filter that needs cleaning outside the pond where it is easy to get to.
