DO NOT PUT GOLDFISH OR KOI INTO THE LAKE
Mary,
Respectfully, I disagree. (And please don’t snip my post you are replying to.) One has to use common sense here and not just become rabid on the issue. Some extreme aspects of this discussion of keeping every non-native species out of the environment begin to sound like the Nazi’s extreme insistence on ethnic purity and modern excuses for ethnic cleansing.
Biology is a natural process where populations of organisms naturally change over time. It is and should never be expected to be static. That is one of the primary mechanisms of evolution.
Again one has to use common sense. A self limiting introduction of non-native species can actually enrich an environment and increase bio-diversity to the benefit of the environment. On the other hand some introductions have clearly gotten out of hand. In my judgement goldfish are almost impossibly unlikely to have any deleterious environmental impact and might actually have some benefits, eg. they can survive in low oxygen shallow and turbid environments where many other fish cannot. As such they might well be a valuable control of mosquito larvae in shallow ponds other native fish wouldn’t survive in.
