[AquaticLife] is RO water absolutely necessary for Discus?

Bruce, Contrary to what you have have been lead to believe, while Discus will of course breed just great in RO water, for their long-term health they should never be kept in pure RO water, but in RO water mixed with tap water to the desired hardness and conductivity, if your tapwater is too high in TDS. I find them easily bred up to about 3.5 dGH, for tank-reared breeders although wild breeders prefer the hardness at little more than 2. Still, even at that low of hardness, there are still enough carbonates in the water to sustain good health and prevent minerals (calcium, etc.) from being slowly leached from them. This is one reason why the juveniles do so well with growing in slighly harder, moderately alkaline water. Ray
