adding salt

I never use salt just to use it, but I know there are some that do. My belief is that “freshwater” fish are called “freshwater” for a reason and God or mother nature (if you don’t believe in God) does not add salt to their natural waters.
In the times I did use salt in an aquarium, I would take the recommended dosage, divide it by three and add one third every 12 hours to give the fish and biological filtration a chance to acclimate to the salt in the water. Mix the salt with some fresh water or removed pond/tank water to dilute it thoroughly first, then pour it slowly into the water at various points and avoid pouring when a fish swims near. You should remove any plants if this is a water garden, instead of a Koi pond, as some plants are very intolerant of salt.
Here’s an article written by a veterinarian explaining salt use as a treatment but also for general dosing. http://www.aquarticles.com/articles/ponds/Kebus_Salt_Treatments.html
